Church. How does that word make you feel? For the first time in our country’s history there are more people who do not go to church than do. There are an estimated 175-190 million people in the United States (total population 300 million) today that have either given up on church or have never tried it. The United States is the largest English speaking mission field in the world.
Why is that number significant? Because God instituted the church to be His representative on earth. Although 175 million have given up on or never tried church, it is not necessarily because they have a negative impression of God, it is because they have either a negative opinion of church and Christians or they have no opinion at all. This staggering statistic is what presents us our ground floor opportunity.
The leadership team of Gateway Church is motivated to design a church from the ground up that will compel people to give church another look. Our priority is on creating settings that foster relationships in what we consider life’s three main connections points; God, one another and the world around us. These three connection points provide everyone with “fresh starts, great friends and real purpose.” Who do you know that couldn’t use any of those?
The Franklin/Spring Hill/Thompson Station area is attracting a diverse base of people, many of whom are from outside Tennessee. With relocation comes anxiety and unsettledness, looking for new friends and places to feel safe and cared for. You knew where you fit in your old community, but where do you fit now? The truth is that most people have a sense of disconnection whether they have recently moved to a new area or not. And we are designing a church from the ground up to meet those relationship needs.
We are looking for more people who share our vision for this new church. Although we are growing rapidly, we are still a very young church with plenty of shaping still to be done. How many people do you know who have had a hand in shaping a church? Maybe if more people who do not go to church could help design one, more people could be exposed to the life giving message of Jesus!
